The oldest fort on coast constructed in the regime of Raja Bhoj of Shilahar Dynasty in 1205 (construction period 1193-1205). The fort was earlier known as "Gheria" as it is situated in the village "Girye". Shivaji  won this fort from Adilshaha of Bijapur in 1653 and renamed it as “Vijay Durg” as Vijay means Victory.

This is only one of the two forts of the Maratha kingdom, where King Shivaji personally hoisted the saffron flag.  The other fort is "Torana".
This fort was also known as "Eastern Gibraltar" as this fort was impregnable for a long time like the fort “Gibraltar” inEurope. This impregnable fort has some location advantages.  One such advantage is 40 km long

Even today one can see lots of empty cannon balls lying inside the fort in front of the secret meeting room , just after crossing the main door.

Vijaydurg was truly a complete fort in all senses. It had huge meeting rooms , courts , stables , soldier quarters , even a naval dock , which was used to build and repair Maratha warships. Maratha Battleships gained its name under the leadership of Kanhoji Angre and Vijaydurg became one of the strongest naval forts in those days.

One of the architectural marvels in Vijaydurg is its underground passages . Few of them are still usable and to feel the uniqueness of these underground passages , one has to visit them.

About Host

The Atithi Parinay Homestay is promoted by Ms. Medha & Vasudha Sahasrabudhe, the Mother - Daughter duo.

http://www.atithiparinay.com/about.html

Medha Sahasrabudhe, an Interior Desiger by profession, has done One Year PG Diploma in "Sustainable Management of Natural Resources & Nature Conservation" from
Ecological Society, Pune. She always dreamt of having her own resort, but never thought of ending it here at ATITHI PARINAY. The vision, dynamism & business acumen of Medha has nurtured ATITHI PARINAY. Being an Interior Desiger she wanted to make a mark in terms of rooms interiors, in this process she went and studied different hotels & resorts. After doing some research & fieldwork the thought of having different combination of accommodations came up and so was born the concept of tree houses, tents & cottages. Keeping in mind the sanctity of environment she has tried to make it a Eco-friendly Resort. And now villagers are a part of this venture and are working with Atithi Parinay which is an additional source of income for them.

Mrs. Vasudha Sahasrabudhe is a House-maker. She isn't a career oriented woman, even though she was back-bone of her husband late Mr. Manohar Sahasrabudhe. She always welcomes her guests with a smiling face, even when it was at their Pune Residence.
There was a time when one guest used to leave and other would be standing at the door. So hospitality was never something that she needed to catch hold of. Managing people was also a task she use to do because of her husbands business.
And now at age of 56 she is started her career with her daughter.
As Medha says, earlier she was her father's back-bone, now she is hers too.

This property has historical, cultural & natural value. As Atithi Parinay is spread over 3 acres. This has been developed for more than 10 years now.
Atithi Parinay is a mix of rural structures with modern amenities, where rooms are made in locally available stone, with cowdunk flooring and the courtyards are converted into spacious bathrooms, with all modern amenities. Atithi Parinay has combination of tree plantation, farm, open aangans , floral plants and to top it all, there is a river flowing near the premises.
Tree houses are usually not built in Maharashtra. Against all odds Atithi Parinay has succeded in building a Tree House at a height of 12ft which also has an attached bathroom.
Honeymoon couples love to stay in the Tree House. Living at Atithi Parinay is a experience in itself, it has an edge over all the resorts in Ratnagiri. It is a complete village experience, which can't be experienced in today's modern world. At Atithi Parinay you can go back to your childhood where games like Gilli-Danda, Playing with Pebbles, Music-chair can be played. Visit ATITHI PARINAY to experience Real Konkan, as this is a perfect holiday destination for your family.
